About

Fine Tilth is a 1.5-acre market garden tucked into a quiet pocket of the Salt Lake Valley. The name comes from a farming term. Fine tilth is the condition you get when you've built soil properly โ€” loose, crumbly, alive with microbial activity, ready to receive seed. It's the goal every time you put a tool in the ground, and we think about it constantly. We're no-till. These beds have been undisturbed for four years now. Every inch of organic matter that accumulates stays put. We feed the soil with our own compost, worm castings, fermented plant extracts, and cover crops between every rotation. The theory: if you take care of the ground, the ground takes care of the plants. So far, it's working. We specialize in things that don't travel well and that you won't find at the grocery store. Living salad mix cut the morning of market. French breakfast radishes pulled still cold from the ground. Edible flowers for the cooks and the food-obsessed. Herbs that actually smell like something. You'll find us at the SLC Downtown Farmers Market under the deep green tablecloth, usually on the north row. Pre-orders are how we plan our harvest โ€” ordering ahead genuinely helps us know what to bring.

From the Farm

This week's herb bundle: bronze fennel + chervil

Bronze fennel is going off right now โ€” feathery, anise-forward, incredible with fish or roasted carrots. Chervil is a spring herb that most people have never tasted. Bringing 18 bundles on Saturday. These are pre-order only โ€” I can't bring extras across the valley.

Behind the scenes: making our own compost tea

Brewed a 50-gallon batch yesterday โ€” worm castings, kelp, molasses, and a small amount of fish hydrolysate. Foliar-sprayed the brassica beds at 6am this morning while it was still cool. The plants can tell the difference.

First salad greens of the season ๐Ÿฅฌ

The beds finally woke up. Cut our first full batch this morning โ€” mix has: baby oak leaf, two types of butterhead, arugula, and mizuna. Pre-ordering for Saturday if you want to guarantee a bag. Limited to 30 this week.
